Manitas de Plata in Heidelberg at Dec. 14th, 1999

Bamboleo Djobi, Bamboleo Djoba, Asi se canta la Rhumba de Manitas'

That was the beginning played by two of three "Los Baliardos"
- Antonio Baliardo and Chico Batista, a far family member.

Than, after two futher Rumbas, Manero appeared and they played some rhumbas,
some good songs with Maneros voice.

After 15 minutes, Manitas came on stage, and they played all together, Manitas solo,
for about one hour (!)

A 20 minutes break followed, and they played, like in the first part, Manitas solo, all together, Manitas with Manero singing and so far. At the middle of second part, Manitas and Manero left the micros beside, came to the stage front and played "unplugged".
The room was absolutely silent so that even in the last corner the guitar and the voice was well to hear !! What is greater than great ?? This part !! The very first minutes of Manitas let turn the eyes of Manero to sky, Manitas seemd to be not in form, but after 5 minutes of "warm up" he played as good, even better as ever ! New songs, old songs, new versions of old songs, nearly 2 hours of guitar-firework.
As I saw him for the first time, I never saw his fingers, he has fingers like a freehand - mountaineer ! I have really no ladyfingers, but what my thumb is, is his little finger, so it's to understand how he can play so powerfull with all his fingers of his right hand. I must say, that after having viewed him playing, I have now a new relation to his solo compositions, first of all, I liked the rumbas with family members - but now, I like the others too.
Manéro
A member of the mailinglist reclamed, that while he is singing, what he rarely does, he can't play the guitar - that's right for a good reason: You must see him, a "pokerface" , no movement in it, eyes closed, the mouth closed, the upper lip a bit over the other - the personalised conzentration - 'til a very difficult part is over, than he opens the eyes and grins - it's impossible to sing at these moments !

After the concert, of course, we, Jörg Spiller, his "wife" met all in the restaurant beside the hall. The manager is ok, a very busy, fluent French talking man, not usual for a Bavarian guy :-) and has a good knowledge of what happens around Gitanos de Camargue. Manitas HO about musicians he knows: Manero is a good guitar player now, with Hippolyte's playing he is not very happy, and the GK you can forget, he can't like them..... After concert, I can say, that Manero really is a good player.
They all has been quiet impressed that we have here a little radio station with a 4 weekly broadcast of "Camargue Flamenco", and it was to see and to feel, that Manero was very happy that I own "Dile", his CD and said, that he was very happy with Kemal's and Roy's guitar play on this CD.
Manéro and Manitas
The first vinyl from Manitas, done without Manitas permition, isn't nomore a subject to be angry about, because it was that vinyl making him known, but they all are still very unhappy about the way gone by some people, taking advantage of his illiteracy. Some remarks about Chico Batista: He is the rythm, the Rumba, and if somewhere you see his name on a CD, listen to it and buy it. He is about 60, a bit corpulent, allways laughing, has a German "Girlfrind", and, as all the others, very kind. Waiting for the drinks, Manitas made the round of the restaurant and talked to the guests, coming from the concert too.
The manager told me, that in a few weeks, a CD from a group "Gipsyland" will come out, here a so called "Kiko" ( ?? ) is member and that I should open my eyes to find it. So if you hear / see something........ At 1:oo AM, a very impressionating evening finished..........
Some technical remarks: The pictures has been taken without flash on a 2oo ASA film, or with a 50 mm or a 135 mm objectiv. The last picture I have to "thank" to Jög Spiller, who was not able to focus the camera :-((
